Huddles
Morning Huddles – 11 a.m.
Experience Montgomery Square:
At Montgomery Square, you can journey through the decade that changed the world, in the very place where history happened. The square is at the top of Montgomery Street, the street where tens of thousands of people marched on the final leg of the historic Selma to Montgomery March on March 25, 1965.
Facilitator: This is a self-guided tour. We encourage you to go inside Heroes Hall, at the corner of the square, where different films will be showing.
Location: The mostly outdoor site is located next to the Elevation Convening Center and Hotel. Meet outside conference level exit of the hotel, to the left, for most direct route to the Square.
The Mothers of Gynecology Monument and Park:
The monument, created by artist and activist Michelle Browder, honors the sacrifice of Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, the enslaved women whose bodies were used in gynecological experiments.
Facilitator: Michelle Browder will meet the group at the monument to discuss it’s historical significance and the work that’s now being done to advance Black maternal health and reproductive justice.
Location: 17 Mildred Street. Meet at the round-about at Goldthwaite St across from the conference level exit of the hotel to walk to the park. Michelle Browder
Afternoon Huddles – 2:30 p.m.
Ethical Storytelling: How to Build a Strong Ethical Storytelling Practice
Storytelling is an important part of communications – but there still isn’t clear consensus for ethical storytelling standards and best practices. Often, ethical storytelling can feel in conflict with communications goals – which puts communications staff in a really difficult position. We know what the problems are – but what to do about them?
Learn an ethical storytelling framework and practice that incorporates knowledge from narrative theory, communications, and modeling & simulation. You’ll discover what works, how to introduce new practices and walk away with and you’ll workshop some real life examples together.
Facilitator: Fiona Ramsey, a PR, Storytelling & Communications Consultant. She’s been working in storytelling for nonprofits and social change organizations for 20 years. She’s studied narrative theory and developed an ethical storytelling practice.
Location: The Sanctuary. 432 Goldthwaite St. Meet at the main door of the hotel and walk as a group across the street to the location.
Do it for good: putting together a strategic communications plan for a better world
In this session, we’ll talk about how a strategic communications plan that’s focused on a goal that’s bigger than you or your organization may look different than more traditional plans.
Huddle Facilitators: Ann Searight Christiano, Director, Center for Public Interest Communications and Erin Hart, Founder and President, Hart Strategies
Location: Hilltop Public House, 3 N Goldthwaite St., directly across the street from Elevation hotel main entrance.
